SeaForest LIFE

The SeaForest LIFE project carries out concrete actions for the conservation of the Posidonia meadows, aiming at decreasing their degradation, which is proceeding unabated. It also gives local businesses and the parks involved the opportunity to purchase carbon credits that will be used to reduce their gaseous emissions, thus helping to improve the carbon stores generated by the Posidonia meadows and contributing actively to climate change mitigation.

Posidonia oceanica has the unique ability to produce oxygen and capture carbon dioxide in its roots: it is therefore a vital ecosystem for combating climate change. Despite being globally protected, this habitat is disappearing mainly due to human activities, and we have already lost 29% of the world’s seagrass beds.
